The Bush Family Dynasty

George W. Bush fueled speculation that his father, the former President Bush, is handling strategy in this year's campaign when Dick Cheney was selected to be the Vice Presidential running mate. Cheney played a central role in the elder Bush's cabinet as Secretary of Defense, and now during the GOP convention gives the younger Bush the appearance of introducing a family dynasty to American politics.

George W. Bush is proudly proclaiming his loyalty and admiration for his father, something we would naturally expect from a family-oriented Cancer native. Family dynasties are nothing new in American politics, with several presidents owing their initial national recognition and perhaps political shrewdness to their immediate patriarchal lineage.

George senior and George junior share a remarkable sequence of cosmic reflections with the first American Presidential family dynasty, that of John Adams (the second president) and his eldest son John Quincy Adams (the sixth President). Like George W., John Quincy Adams was born under the sign of Cancer (July 11, 1767), and also like George W., has several key planets in proud, imperialistic Leo, undoubtedly energizing the instinctual drive to establish a family monarchy.

John Adams and George Bush (senior) likewise share some remarkable planetary parallels. John Adams (October 30, 1735) and George Bush (June 12, 1924) both have a planet exactly aspecting the U.S. Moon, the symbol for American families. Although born two centuries apart, they both entered this world a mere stone's throw from each other in Quincy and Milton, Massachusetts. If John Adams birth time of 2:57 am* is correct, then his Gemini Midheaven is the same as George Bush's Sun. To the esoteric astrologer, these intriguing coincidences suggest a reincarnating father-son team.

Barak and Arafat Postpone Peace Talks

Palestine's Yasir Arafat and Israel's Ehud Barak ended their marathon peace negotiations last week without a formal agreement. While American mainstream media widely proclaimed the Camp David peace summit had "collapsed" or "failed," more thoughtful analysts (notably Thomas Friedman of the New York Times) touted these meetings as the most successful open discussions during the entire 100 years of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Will Arafat and Barak ever forge a political partnership for the sake of enduring peace centered on volatile Jerusalem? As described in last week's NewsScope, the planetary picture brought an unprecedented astrological window, but the situation turned into a missed opportunity when Arafat wouldn't budge from his mantra of demands.

Comparing the horoscopes of Arafat (August 27, 1929; Cairo, Egypt; 2:00 am) with Barak (February 12, 1942; near Tel Aviv, Israel; 1:30 pm) shows the problem areas. Arafat is a visionary and ideologue with his Sun conjunct Neptune, while Barak is a hard-nosed, practical politician ready to make radical changes for long-term security (Sun square Saturn and Uranus in territorial Taurus).

Both politicians have Juno, the asteroid denoting committed partnership, in the identical location in Scorpio. Both Juno's show a relentless determination for control and dominance by their opposition to planets in stubborn Taurus, a natal situation now being challenged by transiting Uranus in Aquarius. Can Uranus break up unhealthy, fixed ideas about relationships? Ask Brad Pitt, who likewise has Juno in the exact same degree area of Scorpio.

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston Become Friends

Two of Hollywood's brightest stars, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, tied the knot over the weekend following months of denials that marriage was in their future. Pitt, voted People magazine's sexiest man of the year in 1995, and "Friends" star Aniston have been dating since early 1998 following his broken engagement with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Brad Pitt was born an adventurous Sagittarian (December 18, 1963; Shawnee, OK; time unknown) with his Moon and several other planets in ambitious Capricorn. Pitt's exalted masculinity can be seen in the placement of his Mars, which is strengthened and matured in Capricorn, and given personal power and mythological courage by closely aspecting Jupiter, Chiron, Uranus, and Pluto.

Jennifer Aniston was born an Aquarius, the sign of friends (February 11, 1969; Sherman Oaks, CA; time unknown). Her Moon in freedom-loving Sagittarius resonates neatly with Pitt's Sun, plus the two have mutual Venus-Mars links, indicating that their sexual compatibility is nothing less than blissful.

While friendship comes naturally to Aniston, Pitt has to work hard to understand this kind of relationship since he has the taskmaster Saturn in Aquarius (and squaring Juno). Their close Sun-Saturn conjunction represents the juice that makes this relationship dynamic, bringing difficult lessons in trust but with the prospect of security and stability. They married as transiting Uranus was exactly conjunct their Sun-Saturn alignment.

* Rectified from an approximate time by Doris Chase Doanes. Arafat's birth time is questionable.
