Religious Turf Battles

Two world leaders visited the most dangerous hotspots on the globe last week with the expressed aim of reducing international tensions brought about by mixing religion with politics. President Clinton braved the India-Pakistan confrontation over the Kashmir issue, and Pope John Paul was making an historic pilgrimage to the Middle East where he met with Islamic, Jewish and Christian leaders.

In both cases the going got tough as soon as Mars entered Taurus last Thursday. Clinton was in Pakistan facing a hostile populace and military regime. The pope was in Jerusalem conducting an open meeting with Israel's chief rabbi and the deputy chief justice of the Palestinian Islamic court. In both cases the forums had moments of intense acrimony, but the two leaders each spoke of transcending religious conflict for the sake of peace.

Astrologically, Taurus is closely associated with land. If a person's religion is largely a function of geography (meaning where a person is born is the single most important indicator of his or her religious affiliation), then Taurus may be considered the most religious of the twelve signs. And now, with Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn all in Taurus, we can expect religious turf battles to dominate the news.

When fighting Mars enters Taurus, a religious person gets into nasty religious conflicts. Last week on the same day that Mars entered Taurus House Speaker Dennis Hastert appointed the first Catholic priest in American history to serve as the House chaplain. Since many leaders of the House are born-again Christians who are uncomfortable with Catholics, the appointment created a firestorm of controversy.

Earth Day 2000

The 30th anniversary of the first Earth Day is expected to motivate people all across the world to take action for the environment. Eco-citizens will be celebrating by staging rallies, holding workshops, planting trees, and cleaning up trash from the highways and waterways.

Earth Day 2000 arrives accompanied by the epochal planetary alignment in Taurus, the primary sign associated with the earth element. The theme of this year's events is the number 30, in honor of the 30th anniversary. Thirty days before April 22 is when the relatively fast-moving Mars entered Taurus, thereby energizing the slower-moving Jupiter and Saturn already in Taurus, and also energizing environmental awareness.

Saturn is the ultimate 30 year cycle, and the first organized environmental campaign began when Saturn was last in Taurus 30 years ago. The day of the event is scheduled for when the Sun enters Taurus on April 22. However, Earth Week (April 16-22) is expected to be extra eventful, especially from an astrological perspective.

Earth Week begins exactly as Mars and Saturn are conjunct in Taurus, and lasts until Mars squares revolutionary Uranus in Aquarius. Mars linking the dynamic tension between Saturn and Uranus is a highly reactionary force. The most rebellious types will be reacting against the burning of fossil fuels for energy, a process that has released 160 billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere since 1970, and contributed to global warming and extreme weather. Eco-terrorism against corporate polluters cannot be ruled out.

Paul McCartney's New Love Song

Paul McCartney, the last Beatle to marry, lost his wife Linda to breast cancer in 1998, but recently has been seen with a young woman mistaken for his daughter, Heather. After months of speculation, he finally admitted that he's dating a crusading activist, vegetarian Heather Mills.

Paul McCartney was born in the wordsmith sign of Gemini (on June 18, 1942; Liverpool; 2:00 pm*). Neptune, the natural ruler of musicians, dominates his chart by being conjunct his perfectionist Virgo Ascendant. Neptune is further enhanced by a beautiful trine to Venus, the natural ruler of love and love songs.

McCartney ended his bachelor days on March 12, 1969 when he married Linda Eastman, a well-known rock photographer. The end of bachelorhood was mourned by thousands of starstruck girls, and paralleled astrologically by Saturn's transit through his eighth house of death and rebirth. The two lovebirds hit it off, and their relationship lasted until Linda died on April 17, 1998, that is, until Saturn returned to the exact location of their marriage 29 years earlier, back in the eighth house of death and rebirth.

Both Heather and Linda fulfill his needs since his seventh house of partners is occupied by kind-hearted Ceres. Ceres here is propelled by favorable trines to Mars and Pluto, and motivated by charity and volunteerism by being in compassionate Pisces. Next month transiting Jupiter and Saturn will be conjunct his Venus by which time we can expect some momentous announcement about this relationship. Watch around May 7 when Ceres turns direct on McCartney's Ascendant.
