Al Gore and the U'wa

Following last Super Tuesday's convincing victories for the mainstream candidates, Senators Bradley and McCain ended their national campaigns. McCain left the door ajar for a possible third party bid, as Bush backers in the Justice Department immediately reopened the campaign finance scandal against Al Gore.

Al Gore's character is strongly flavored by Neptune, the natural ruler of scandal, since his Aries Sun opposes Neptune in his natal horoscope. Neptunian affairs are what Gore is all about, and especially noteworthy now is the $500,000 worth of Occidental Petroleum stock he inherited from his father. Although Gore is widely recognized as the most knowledgeable politician when it comes to environmental issues, he is caught in a tricky situation in Colombia, the home of cocaine, untapped oil reserves, and a forgotten indigenous tribe.

Gore's personal interest in supporting Occidental Petroleum (a huge campaign contributor) is undermined by the oil company's plans to explore the sacred grounds of the U'wa Indians in Colombia's Amazon forest. The U'wa people have been threatened, harassed, and murdered by Colombian guerrillas, and now the entire U'wa tribe is threatening mass suicide unless the multinational oil company leaves them alone.

The guerrillas represent the other part of the Neptune equation with their military protection of Colombia's cocaine traffickers. Occidental's Vice President admitted during a congressional hearing a month ago (precisely as transiting Neptune entered Gore's seventh house) that it regularly pays the Colombian guerrillas. This puts Gore in the untenable position of supporting both the cocaine cartel as well as the destruction of the U'wa rainforest.

Mozambique, Living Downstream from Polluters

Last Friday an article in Science magazine indicated that industrial pollution, especially acid rain, causes local desertification. Satellite images of power plants, oil refineries, and lead smelters showed how pollution tracks completely shut off downstream precipitation. One scientist commented that "preventing rainfall in a particular region would leave the vapor in the air and that would eventually rain more elsewhere."

Meanwhile, the people of Mozambique were hard-pressed to understand why they should be victimized by the worst environmental disaster of the new millennium. Aside from the ecology dictum that everything is connected, Mozambique's horoscope reflects it's predicament. Mozambique gained independence on June 25, 1975 at midnight when the Sun was very close to squaring Pluto, the planet of death and rebirth (see Tobey Maguire's horoscope in last week's NewsScope).

The asteroid Ceres is closely associated with disaster and relief efforts. Ceres in Mozambique's chart is found in Taurus, right in line with May's epochal Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignment. Ceres has many natal aspects, some beneficial and some difficult, showing how the country has gained economically through international assistance, as well as been victimized by severe global weather conditions.

The most disaster-prone aspect seems to be Ceres-Pluto combinations which is present in Mozambique's chart with the tri-octile aspect (3/8 of the zodiac). This natal potential is now being activated by transiting Ceres, which is passing right over Mozambique's Pluto. If George W. Bush becomes the next U.S. President, his Ceres-Pluto opposition guarantees that the U.S. will be occupied full time with disaster relief projects.

Kathy Lee Quits "Live"

Perky talk show host Kathie Lee Gifford announced recently that she's leaving "Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee" after 15 years of engaging morning coffee klatches. Kathie Lee explained that she's worried about co-host Regis Philbin who has been moonlighting for the runaway success "Who Wants to be a Millionaire," saying that he's too tired and the audience deserves better.

Kathie Lee Gifford was born a fiery, dramatic Leo (on August 16, 1953; 11:30 pm; Neuilly-sur-Seine, France) with her Moon in emotionally-deep, sexy Scorpio. Kathie Lee made her decision to quit following transiting Saturn's square to her Mars. Mars in a woman's chart often represents the men in her life, and with Saturn traveling through her secretive twelfth house, we can be sure that tension behind the scenes had built to the breaking point.

An astrologer seeing this Saturn development might question how she's getting along with her husband, sportscaster Frank Gifford, who was caught in an affair with a stewardess a couple of years ago (as transiting Pluto entered Kathie Lee's seventh house of partners). But Kathie Lee says they're fine, and by seeing the beautifully supportive progressions to her marriage asteroid Juno, the astrologer confirms this happy state.

The love planets Venus and Mars are forming an ongoing, harmonious sextile to her Juno, and she reflected on the bliss generated by this progressed aspect: "Each time you make love, that person feels forgiven, and you feel restored and loved again. Let me just smile and say I have no complaints."
