Saturn and Uranus Bring Paradigm Shift

Last Monday the largest corporate merger in history was proposed with the announcement that AOL, the world's No. 1 online service provider, will buy out Time Warner, the world's largest media and entertainment conglomerate, for $180 billion in stock and cash. The deal represents a paradigm shift in the way corporations are valued since Time Warner's annual revenues far surpass AOL's.

Astrologically, a confluence of planetary events correspond to this stunning development. Saturn and Uranus have been squaring each other for nearly a year, and at the moment they are each in critical zodiacal locations. Uranus is entering the U.S. fourth house where it guarantees to shake up the status quo, especially by introducing new technologies.

Authoritarian Saturn in financial Taurus can be seen to represent the titans of industry. Saturn was at the most powerful point of its cycle by being stationary direct, and simultaneously many top CEOs were in key transitional phases in their personal lives. Steve Case emerged as a Wunderkind and visionary risk-taker, and will be the chairman of the board for the new AOL Time Warner.

In the same week Microsoft CEO Bill Gates stepped down from his exalted post, as the Justice Dept. revealed its intentions to break up his company into three smaller companies. Meanwhile, top executives from Yahoo, Disney, GE, and other giant media corporations were scrambling for deals to match AOL Time Warner. On Friday the giant British pharmaceutical firms Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham resumed merger talks that would make a deal even surpassing the AOL Time Warner merger.

Brick Red Lunar Eclipse Scheduled for Thursday

A total lunar eclipse arrives this Thursday, January 20 at 11:41 pm (EST), and is the first to be visible over the continental U.S. since September 1996. This eclipse has several outstanding astrological features, including a Mars-Pluto square, a Mercury-Neptune conjunction, and a Venus-Jupiter trine.

The eclipse will be tinged with red hues, described as “brick red” by some astronomers. Red is associated with Mars and violence, and unfortunately Mars and Pluto are squaring each other, which is an astrological signature known for its violent tendencies. At the very least, expect intense competition among the presidential hopefuls leading into next week's Iowa primary. The eclipse squares Israel's Ascendant, indicating strong domestic opposition to any land-for-peace deal as the diplomats return to the negotiating table.

Venus trine Jupiter is a measurement indicating prosperity and abundance for those with natal placements in line with this aspect. Venus and Jupiter harmoniously flank the U.S. Moon-Pallas and perhaps resemble golden wings, indicating an ongoing surging stock market and other promising economic news.

Mercury conjunct Neptune in Aquarius brings the most inspiring messages. For those with key natal planets in early Aquarius or the other fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, and Scorpio), you may now tune into your higher purpose, or receive clear visions of the future. Poets, mystics, inventors, musicians, seekers, dreamers, and channelers will all thrive under this spectacular Lunar Eclipse.

Steve Case Makes a Quantum Leap

Last week's mega-merger announcement between AOL and Time Warner turned the imminent presidential primaries into a quaint sideshow. The excitement and wonder over what Time Warner and AOL could possibly accomplish together only escalated as co-CEOs Steve Case and Gerald Levin made the interview circuits with their upbeat forecasts.

Steve Case was born with his Leo Sun conjunct Regulus, the first magnitude star associated with royalty (August 21, 1958; Honolulu, HI; time unknown). With his Sun linked to Jupiter, Neptune, and Pluto Case is empowered by transpersonal goals, so that he becomes a willing agent to lead evolutionary social changes. His first company, the precursor to AOL, was called Quantum Computer Services, and Sun-Pluto people tend make quantum leaps as long as they are fulfilling a larger social role.

Case's Mercury-Pluto conjunction gives penetrating insights into business possibilities. Often his best strategy involves forming partnerships or alliances with compatible enterprises, essentially seeing the potential that others have missed. Juno, the partnership asteroid, reflects this acumen by being conjunct his Mercury-Pluto.

His Mars reflects a reckless, risk-taking side to his personality. Mars in Taurus generally brings solid financial shrewdness and tremendous perseverance, but it's square to Chiron on the one hand and Uranus on the other, all of which intensifies his drive and potential to make wild risks. On more than one occasion Case bet his entire AOL empire on a bold vision for the future. Now the same uncertainty clouds his alliance with Time Warner. Perhaps he's the only one who knows for certain that it will work.
