As Saturn Turns

Saturn’s momentous change of direction this week points to the extremely important events in Washington, and for the entire global village. The lead story, both domestically and internationally, is the signing of the Global Warming Treaty in Kyoto. This global warming issue will shape the political landscape through the next Presidential campaign as politicians spar over the economic impact and the accuracy of scientific forecasting models.

Since Mercury is retrograde, the signing of this document will lead to many misunderstandings, interruptions in the ratification process, and extended delays. Washington insiders are already saying that this treaty will not be ratified by the Senate in 1998, and perhaps not until or unless Al Gore is the next President.

Mercury retrograde indicates that the focus should not be on the outer form, but the inner meaning of this agreement, which was signed by 159 sovereign nations. One of the central issues yet to be resolved is the international authority that would enforce the agreement, a delicate matter to be taken up next year in Argentina. Will Americans allow the United Nations to restrict its pollutants?

Over the next year Saturn enters Taurus, where it naturally directs attention to the security of our global resources, whether those are financial or natural resources. Then Neptune will be in Aquarius, which dilutes national sovereignty in favor of more efficient and equitable ways of organizing the peoples of our global village. Economic and environmental concerns (Saturn in Taurus) will be reacting to the international vision (Neptune in Aquarius) necessary for long term planetary health.

Signposts to the Millennium: #5
Chiron-Pluto Conjunction

Chiron and Pluto will form a conjunction on Dec. 30, 1999!!!! Occurring right at the Millennium, this dramatic conjunction is the most appropriate astrological symbol for leaving the past behind, and moving into the future. Chiron, the bridge into the unknown, aligns with Pluto, the destroyer of the outmoded identity.

Chiron is occasionally associated with a distorted sense of time, or an awareness of events outside of the time continuum. One manifestation of this is known as the “Millennium Problem,” where corporate computers have dated their files with only two digits. This potential mega-snafu is being feverishly assaulted by an army of programmers, but if they don’t succeed in remedying the glitch, the computer-dependent global marketplace could crash.

This connection certainly has its violent side, as the last Chiron-Pluto conjunction at 4 degrees Leo demonstrates. That was in 1941 when Nazi Germany was initiating the final solution to the “Jewish problem.” When Israel gained its independence, the Moon was at the top of its national horoscope, and located at 4 degrees Leo.

This pending Chiron/Pluto takes place at 11 degrees Sagittarius, so any nation or individual with this degree prominently placed will be intimately connected with the momentous events of the Millennium shift. Israel will certainly be involved, as well as the United States, perhaps in an attempt to moderate a resolution to the Jerusalem problem.

Steven Spielberg Directs Amistad
B Director Steven Spielberg’s uncanny sense of the cultural times now brings us the intense story of Amistad about an African slave rebellion in 1839. What makes this film so poignant and relevant is that Neptune is about to enter Aquarius, an astrological phase that inspires passions for equality, freedom, and a just society. Neptune was last in Aquarius in 1834-1848 during the Abolitionist movement which presents the background cultural clash for Amistad.

Spielberg was born an adventurous Sagittarius (Dec. 18, 1946; 6:16 PM EST; Cincinnati, OH), with Neptune playing a major role in his horoscope. Neptune, the planet associated with film, is the ruler of his career point, the Midheaven. It resides in his fourth house where it resonates through his entire personality (squares the Ascendant, trines the North Node).

Several indicators point to an unusually celebrated or famous life. Spielberg’s Midheaven is exactly aligned with the U.S. Neptune, putting him in touch with the hopes and dreams of the American people. Also his Sun is aligned with the Galactic Center, an esoteric point which motivates one to break through cultural barriers, and move toward a more global perspective.

Because Spielberg has several placements at precisely ten degrees, this point becomes a magnet for important or pivotal life changes. Currently his progressed Mars is at ten degrees Aquarius, sensitizing him to the Aquarian vibration now awakening across our planet, and the struggle, the fight (Mars) for liberation (Aquarius). Then his progressed Moon is crossing the nadir, indicating an entire new direction for the billionaire film director.
