Mars-Neptune: A Time for Heroes

For the first time since 1990 Colombian officials extradited suspected cocaine kingpins to stand trial in Florida. Colombia, which produces 80 percent of the world’s cocaine, has recently been the scene of massive public rallies aimed at ending chronic violence and civil war. In Turkey meanwhile, Kurdish guerrilla leader Abdullah Ocalan’s death sentence was upheld by a higher court.

These parallel developments occurred as combat-ready Mars entered ideological Aquarius, and was nearing its conjunction with the stealth planet, Neptune. Both Ocalan and the cocaine drug lords are held to be regional heroes, and their trials by the dominant social order will likely lead to spasms of terrorism and social unrest. Mars-Neptune people are the true believers, the martyrs, and the sacred warriors, as well as the dirty tricksters.

In the United States the Mars-Neptune combination is influencing the WTO summit in Seattle. Protest leaders have been training activists from unions, environmental groups, and fringe political movements in non-violent ways of confrontation. Ralph Nader, Pat Buchanan, possibly Fidel Castro, and untold thousands of would-be heroes are gathering in Seattle to promote their favorite causes.

In the Dirty Tricks Dept., unsubstantiated stories have appeared in the national media about John McCain’s mental instability and explosive anger resulting from his isolation as a Vietnam POW. The source of these stories has been traced to Senators Mitch McConnell and Trent Lott, the powerful frontmen for the corporate welfare programs. McCain’s campaign against Big Money in Washington was getting too close for comfort.

Hillary Turns Direct

Last Tuesday Hillary Clinton ended speculation that she was wavering about her bid for New York’s Senate seat. Coming on the heels of a decidedly neutral diplomatic visit to the Middle East, Hillary’s announcement kicked off what will probably be the most intense, hard-fought race in the country.

Ms. Clinton’s timing and attitude closely followed Mercury’s path, which is no surprise since she has a Gemini Ascendant and is therefore ruled by Mercury. New York Jews were outraged that she sat silently during her diplomatic visit to the West Bank while Soha Arafat accused Israel of using poison gas on Palestinian women and children. Mercury, as governor of speech and opinions, was retrograde, and Hillary too held her tongue to avoid an international incident.

Mercury turned direct last week, and Hillary declared her candidacy. Although Mercury makes around six changes of direction every year, this one was particularly noteworthy for American politics because of its perfect square to the U.S. Midheaven, the point of honor or destiny. Mercury happened to be conjunct Vesta, the asteroid denoting one’s sense of mission, focus, or devotion.

Political astrologers will want to follow the New York race through the lens of the New York horoscope, which is set for July 26, 1788 in Poughkeepsie.* The contest between HRC and Rudolph Giuliani is bound to get tough come January (as Saturn turns direct on NY’s Moon, and Uranus hits NY’s Mercury-Pluto axis). These same indicators point to the possibility of a major natural or man-made disaster.

Chiron Benches Dudley Moore

In 1995 Barbra Streisand had to fire comic Dudley Moore from a film project because he couldn’t remember his lines. Rumors grew that the faltering star was an alcoholic, but the truth came out during Barbara Walters’ recent heart-wrenching interview where he painfully described his debilitating brain disease similar to Parkinson’s.

Dudley Moore was born with the eccentric combination of Sun conjunct Uranus (on April 19, 1935; 6:30 pm; Dagenham, England). His quirkiness easily translated into irresistible impishness with Mars in charming Libra and Venus, the ruler of his chart, in witty Gemini. Venus and her network of aspects describe his immense talent in music and as a storyteller, which he parlayed into instant success in “Ten” (with co-star Bo Derek) and in his Oscar-nominated role as “Arthur.”

Venus is conjunct Chiron, and these two are the center of a difficult T-Square involving Saturn and Neptune. Moore was born with a club foot, reflecting the physical handicap that so often accompanies Chiron’s stressful link to the Ascendant or ruler of the Ascendant. On September 29 he announced he had PSP (progressive supernuclear palsy) when his progressed Chiron was exactly squaring Neptune.

The nature of his illness is essentially Neptunian: unknown cause, hard to diagnose, forgetfulness, and dizziness. However, the holistic astrologer might understand this disease as the physical manifestation of chronic relationship problems, as signified by his dynamic Venus placement (plus Juno in the T-Square; progressed Juno opposite Mars). He developed PSP precisely as he was going through his fourth divorce.
