Saturn’s Next Stop: Jerusalem
In Bill Clinton’s sincere efforts to atone for his sins, he
played the peacemaker last week in brokering a deal
between Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian
leader Yasser Arafat. Clinton’s Libra planets were put to
their best use when he sat for sleepless hours intuitively
reading each leader’s needs, especially those unspoken or
implied, and then translating those needs so the other could
understand.
The central issue dividing Israel and the Palestinian
Authority was the handling of terrorism. Sitting in on the
negotiations was CIA Director George Tenet, who offered
his spy agency to referee disputes involving suspected
terrorists. The CIA will reportedly monitor those arrested,
and establish sophisticated equipment along border
checkpoints.
The entrance of the CIA marks the first deployment of
American forces in the Middle East peace effort, something
that Arafat has been requesting for many years. America’s
covert operations (having just received a $20 billion boost
in budget) will be responsible for monitoring and verifying
the toughest provisions of this agreement.
Astrologically, the negotiations came during a
Saturn-Neptune square, which concluded when the Sun
entered Scorpio, and completed a dynamic, three planet
configuration. Neptune’s influence covers secret
operations, both terrorist activities and government covert
operations. But Saturn is the ultimate test which reaches
the critical point (conjunct U.S. Descendant) in May 1999.
Cosmic Weather Brings Flurry of Environmental Issues
Last week the nation’s largest diesel engine manufacturers
agreed to pay a record $1 billion in fines for deceptive and
illegal pollution practices. Since 1990 about a million
trucks have been generating the equivalent amount of
nitrous oxides that 48 million cars produce. Meanwhile,
eco-terrorists went on a rampage in Colorado to protest the
destruction of America’s last habitat for the Lynx.
One of the best ways to astrologically track the
environmental movement is by using the horoscope of the
first Earth Day, set for April 21, 1970. The Sun had just
entered Taurus, the first earth sign, and Mercury, Venus,
and Saturn were also in Taurus. This past week our global
village has experienced a flurry of environmentally-related
stories, as transiting Saturn and Neptune align with the
Earth Day’s Taurus Sun.
Saturn and Neptune have much resonance with political
movements as practical Saturn works with visionary
Neptune. In the New Mexico Governor’s race, the Green
Party candidate bowed out, so that the Democrat candidate
now has a good chance of winning over the incumbent
Republican. Environmental issues are rising in prominence
this election season since politicians and voters alike are
weary of the Clinton scandal.
While the U.S. Green Party is being co-opted by the
Democrats, last week Germany’s recently elected
Chancellor Gerhard Shroeder appointed three Green Party
members to his cabinet. This unexpected move represents a
dramatic shift from the conservative Kohl government
which has led Germany for the last 16 years. Now Germany
is increasing taxes on polluters to raise revenue for social
programs, and will begin shutting down their 19 nuclear
power plants.
“The State of Israel Has Arisen”
On the afternoon of May 14, 1948 Prime Minister David
Ben-Gurion read Israel’s Proclamation of Independence,
recreating a Jewish nation for the first time since the
destruction of Jerusalem nearly 2000 years earlier. At 4:37
pm EET* Ben-Gurion concluded “The state of Israel has
arisen!” and the audience burst into spontaneous
celebration and cheering.
This historic moment represents the symbolic birth of Israel
as a nation, and a horoscope can be drawn up just as one
would for an individual. Israel’s Taurus Sun shows the
powerful drive for physical land and secure territory, and
the Leo Moon near the Midheaven repeats the prominent
security issues. However, the Taurus Sun is in the seventh
house of Open Enemies, and Israel’s status is an ongoing
border probolem with the Palestinians, and other
neighboring descendants of the ancient patriarch Abraham.
Israel has Scorpio Rising, the sign of re-birth. During the
intense nine days of negotiating, serious Saturn was
crossing Israel’s Descendant, the cusp of the seventh house
of Open Enemies. Saturn here describes the arduous,
constructive effort to accomplish mutual understanding.
The deal was signed immediately after the Sun emerged
from the twelfth house and opposed Saturn, and the final
obstacle (spy Jonathan Pollard) was discussed.
Israel’s Taurus Sun is opposed by Chiron in Scorpio.
Chiron in Scorpio reflects the deep woundedness that
comes from a long history of injustice, a description which
can apply to the post-holocaust Jewish state, as well to the
nations and peoples that Israel has constellated around its
borders. This interim agreement just signed in Washington
comes as Chiron has made exactly one complete cycle
since May 14, 1948, and offers the other side of Chiron’s
archetypal energy, the opportunity to heal old wounds.
