Power to the People

Last week Indonesia’s military leader reluctantly agreed to allow an international peacekeeping force into East Timor to quell the violence. Indonesia has been wracked by political, economic, and social chaos over the past two years in its struggle to find a legitimate and secure form of democratic government within the global village.

Indonesia’s profound turmoil resonates astrologically with Pluto, the planet of death and rebirth. In political astrology, the Moon rules the people and their security needs. For the last two years transiting Pluto has been slowly passing over Indonesia’s Moon, leading to the end of Suharto’s 32 year dictatorship last year, and the empowerment of the people through democratic elections only a few months ago.

Indonesia declared its independence on August 17, 1945 when the Moon was in the religious, multi-ethnic sign of Sagittarius. Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country, and contains 300 distinct ethnic groups, speaking some 365 different languages and spread across 13,600 islands. Besides East Timor, active separatist movements have been pushing for independence in West Papua and Aceh, an oil-rich territory in northwestern Sumatra.

The current round of violence coincides with the entrance of Mars into Sagittarius, and will likely subside dramatically by the time Mars reaches Pluto this Wednesday. Perhaps Australia will lead a peacekeeping mission into East Timor at this time. In the long run transiting Saturn remains a major determinate in Indonesia’s horoscope. It culminates on January 11 (exactly squaring Indonesia’s Pluto), ensuring that some form of international or domestic force will be necessary to maintain stability and order through then.

Land-for-Peace Gains Momentum in Israel

Last week Israel handed over 199 political prisoners to the Palestinian Authority, as well as seven percent of the West Bank. These events precipitate the eventual release of 11 percent more of the occupied territory and another 350 prisoners. These developments preserve the land-for-peace momentum initiated by Ehud Barak, Israel’s new Prime Minister, which he is hoping will lead to a final status of Jerusalem before President Clinton leaves office next year.

Combinations of Venus and Jupiter tend to be very favorable in personal as well as political astrology. Known as the Lesser and Greater Benefics, whenever either one of these makes contacts with the horoscope, wonderful fortune in one shape or another can be expected. The combination of Venus and Jupiter is synergistic, bringing a greater benefit than the sum of their individual blessings.

In Israel’s case (b. May 14, 1948; 4:37 pm; Tel Aviv), an accord between Yassir Arafat and Ehud Barak was signed on September 4 (with the punctual assistance of U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright). At the time, transiting Jupiter was at its most powerful position having just made a retrograde station. From there it formed an exact links to Israel’s Venus and security-oriented Moon.

The promise of peaceful co-existence in the Middle East was immediately challenged by two suicide car bombs. The damage was minimal, but the threat for disruption continues. A deadly combination of astrological factors makes this coming Wednesday through Friday a time to tighten security to full strength.

Bill Bradley On the Move

Last Wednesday former Senator Bill Bradley made his official announcement that he’s seeking his party’s nomination for the Presidency. Bradley’s subdued, talkative style contrasts sharply with Al Gore’s brassy speechifying, but otherwise the two candidates have similar voting records, constituencies, and most surprisingly, about the same amount of campaign funds.

Bill Bradley was born a warm-hearted Leo (July 28, 1943; 11:37 am; Crystal City, MO) with his Sun conjunct the wealth-producing, magnificently confident Jupiter-Pluto. When comparing Bradley’s horoscope with Al Gore’s the astrologer is struck by how much these two charts have in common.

The only discord between the two is a major one: Mars squares Mars. A man identifies closely with his Mars, and the zodiacal locations of both were awakened by the recent Solar Eclipse and attendant outer planets. Bradley’s Mars in Taurus is cautious, determined, and fiscally conservative. Gore’s Mars in Leo is proud, imperial, and optimistic. The difference between these two is a fight over style.

Both Al Gore and Bill Bradley have planets located at 16 degrees Leo, which is the nation’s Midheaven, or point of destiny. Gore’s institutionally-savvy Saturn and Bradley’s intellectual Mercury describe their mutual claim to leadership. Although Gore is widely favored in national polls by Democrats, the first primary in February will be held in New Hampshire and should be a big upset.

On February 5 a Solar Eclipse aligns with Uranus, the Awakener. This combination is perfectly aligned with the key 16 degrees Leo point, indicating that Bradley will do very well, and possibly initiate a revolution in popular expectations.
