Russia Surprises NATO
A column of Russian troops leaped ahead of the British and
American contingent late last week, entering Kosovo
through Yugoslavia. Although Russian and NATO
diplomats tried to accommodate the surprise move, some
American military analysts suspect that Russia and Serbian
commanders may have made a secret deal to partition
Kosovo.
The astrological climate now and over the next month is
filled with potentially dangerous international
confrontation, with the leading indicator being the
Saturn-Uranus square scheduled for July 18. Between now
and then, the command-and-control planet, Saturn, most
somehow take into account its celestial menace, the
unpredictable and rebellious Uranus.
Whether the political astrologer is looking at the U.S.
horoscope, Russia’s, NATO’s or the United Nations’, each
of these geopolitical players has key points under stress
from this powerful Saturn-Uranus condition. Saturn’s need
to have a command-and-control environment is clearly
being played out by the U.S. and NATO, while the Uranian
impulsiveness is the cosmic card played by the Russians.
Russia’s horoscope is torn between these two archetypes,
with the Scorpio Sun squaring Saturn on the one hand, and
Uranus on the other. It’s entire existence is an unfolding
drama attempting to balance the inherent conflict between
mutually antagonistic forces.
Meanwhile, the military planet Mars is now advancing
through diplomatic Libra, assuring that the diplomats will
attempt to put the best face on any simmering conflict.
However, expansive, over-confident Jupiter is in the
aggressive sign of Aries, further inspiring moves that could
be described as leaping before looking. The most
dangerous interval will be when transiting Mars squares the
U.S. Pluto, around the 22nd through 27th.
America’s Mental Health
Last week the White House held a conference on mental
illness headed by Tipper Gore and attended via the internet
by mental health professionals across the country. While
President Clinton proposed legislative support, virtually
unreported in the mainstream media was that the last three
high school shooting sprees were conducted by boys on
powerful mind-altering drugs to treat mental illness.
These and simultaneous media events on America’s
struggle with mental illness all occurred as transiting Mars
turned direct while squaring the U.S. Mercury. Mercury is
the natural ruler of mental processes, and in the U.S.
horoscope Mercury is under powerful stress by its
opposition to Pluto. Mercury-Pluto aspects are notorious
for their mental obsessions.
Concurrent with awareness of a significant national mental
health problem has been the entrance of government
investigations into cinematic violence. The Federal Trade
Commission and the Justice Department are both
investigating confidential documents from Hollywood’s top
executives. At the same time, administration officials
tightened procedures for seeing R-rated movies, observing
that America’s fixation with violence is having an
unhealthy impact on teens.
Mental health professionals for the last few decades have
freely promoted the use of Ritalin for youngsters, and
Prozac (the number one selling drug in America) for
anyone with a mental health problem. Now, the violent and
self-destructive side-effects are emerging as a greater
problem than depression or bipolar disorders.
Psychological astrology* is one untapped remedy that
could resolve the situation.
Rupert Murdoch Reaches Divorce Settlement
Billionaire Rupert Murdoch reached an amiable divorce
settlement last week, an arrangement which preserves his
control over the world’s largest media empire. Murdoch’s
passion for work undermined his 31-year marriage to Anna,
who was the mother of three of his four children, and his
most trusted adviser.
Rupert Murdoch was born a visionary Pisces with
hardworking Capricorn on the Ascendant (March 11, 1931;
11:59 pm AEST, Melbourne Australia). With his Sun in the
forth house of roots and the home, Murdoch began his
ventures modestly by inheriting an Australian newspaper
from his father. However, with his Moon in international,
cosmopolitan Sagittarius, Murdoch felt free to give up his
homeland, especially when U.S. citizenship was required to
own American media.
Mars opposite Saturn in his chart represents his intense
drive to win, and often manifests as a recklessness
threatening total disaster. On more than once occasion
Murdoch has leveraged his entire empire to gain a foothold
in a new market. However, with his progressed Jupiter
nearly conjunct his Pluto, we can safely assume that his
status as an influential multi-billionaire media giant will
only grow exponentially over the next few years.
Asteroids hold major positions in Murdoch’s horoscope.
Vesta Rising in Capricorn is the classic workaholic. Pallas
Athene at the Pisces Midheaven reflects his prescient
business acumen, with a doubled influence by being
conjunct Neptune, the ruler of television (FOX) and movies
(Titanic). His Sun is conjunct the marriage asteroid Juno, a
clear reflection of the central role his wife Anna played in
his life.
