India Uncorks Nuclear Genie

India’s new government unexpectedly detonated five underground nuclear tests last week. The American intelligence community was caught off guard for not predicting this unsettling development, in spite of the nationalist BJP’s campaign promise to go nuclear as soon as elected.

The nuclear tests were conducted under the astrologically bold and aggressive combination of a Sun-Mars conjunction. This aspect was the celestial trigger for the more historic planetary combinations discussed last week in this column. The rapidly evolving global marketplace, driven by titanic transnational corporations and an epochal technological revolution, has hit a nuclear iceberg.

Equally disturbing on the international front has been the collapse of the Indonesian economy, and the subsequent rioting over fuel prices. The rioting of Indonesia’s dispossessed represents a second wave of social upheaval, following the first wave of middle class and student protests over Suharto’s rule. The democratic-capitalist social model, or “trickle-down economics,” has been declared null and void by the rioting, looting masses.

Uranus turning retrograde in Aquarius is ushering in a class consciousness that is challenging the status quo. Whether it’s India’s gate-crashing into the exclusive nuclear club, or Indonesia’s have-nots demanding a fair share, the reign of the global village’s plutocrats is under siege.

Neptune is also in Aquarius, and this planetary vibration will eventually manifest a political or religious vision for class equality. Marxism and Mormonism were two variations of social engineering that arose during the 1840s, which was the last time Neptune was in Aquarius.

MicroSoft vs. Saturn

Among the significant turning points reached this week (as Uranus makes its retrograde station) is the release of Windows 98, which will lead to antitrust lawsuits filed by the Justice Department and at least 20 states. Then, the recent flurry of $mega-billion corporate mergers has transcended national laws and borders, but under the pressure of Saturn squaring the U.S. Pluto, limits are beginning to be enforced on corporate excesses.

This week’s combined influence of Saturn and Uranus represents a likely turning point for the stock market’s bullish trend. In three weeks Saturn will enter Taurus when the captains of industry will come under increasing pressure to play fair.

Saturn in Taurus represents the prudent management of resources, which includes natural as well as financial. The global environmental movement began with the first Earth Day in 1970, the last time Saturn was in Taurus. One of the major concerns expressed by climatologists is that a single, above-ground nuclear explosion could trigger an earth-warming cloud, which would raise Antarctica’s fragile Larsen ice shelf the one degree necessary to melt the glacier and flood the earth’s coastal cities.

The important August 11, 1999 Solar Eclipse features Saturn in Taurus square Uranus in Aquarius. The extremely antagonistic planetary forces encoded in this eclipse activate both India’s and Pakistan’s national horoscopes. In addition, the path of total eclipse goes right over the India-Pakistan border.

Sinatra’s Star Power

Ol’ Blue Eyes Frank Sinatra was so popular in the 1940s that his live appearances caused civil disturbances. He continued to rivet America’s attention through several rocky marriages, a movie career, and late-night carousing with his gangster buddies in Las Vegas. As well known for his charity as his volatility, Sinatra succumbed to a heart attack last Thursday at the age of 82.

Sinatra was born a trendy Sagittarius (December 12, 1915; 3:00 AM; Hoboken, NJ), with his Moon in musical Pisces. Nearly every planet in his horoscope is closely alined with a planet in the U.S. horoscope, a match which reflects how his life path would make him an American original, an archetypal icon.

For courage, Sinatra had a Leo Mars (opposite the U.S. Moon) and a close Sun-Jupiter aspect, which lines up with the U.S. Mars. One of Sinatra’s most extraordinary gifts was his ability to hold his breath much longer than other crooners, and in the process merge his song with the audience’s mood and consciousness. This transpersonal bonding is what captivated and fascinated people, and can be seen in his ethereal Pisces Moon which is given power and resonance by the harmonious trine to Pluto.

Neptune conjunct his Leo Midheaven represents the glamorous image that he cultivated and became. Sinatra became a superstar when transiting Pluto arrived at his Midheaven and Neptune in the early 1940s, and he died when transiting Neptune opposed this same degree zone last week. Sinatra’s Saturn on the U.S. Sun shows how he has indelibly shaped American culture and become the voice of the country.
