Turning Points, Crises, and Break-Throughs

A powerful astrological one-two punch is now in play across our global village. Both personally and collectively the atmosphere sparks with electrical tension. Dynamic, earth-shaking events are unfolding in the political, environmental, social, and corporate realms.

The astrological culprits responsible for this state of affairs are Saturn and Uranus. Uranus is approaching its retrograde station in Aquarius, which becomes exact on May 17. The influence of this planet promises a variety of unexpected circumstances, with sudden changes in direction and new conditions.

The Uranus station disrupts old patterns and structures, as new ideas, organizational forms, and technologies are being introduced. Already we have seen a huge breakthrough in cancer research, and Sinn Fein has voted to accept the recent peace negotiation. Godzilla is coming!

At the same time Saturn is forming a challenging aspect to the U.S. Pluto, which also becomes exact on May 17. Under this phase partisan politics gets rough, and we can expect major moves to overwhelm the opposition, in whatever form that may be. Kenneth Starr may have a surprise for the Clintons, and the Justice Department may halt the introduction of Windows 98, which MicroSoft claims will disrupt the entire economy.

Normally, either one of these two planets could lead to a variety of historical shifts. Because their individual influences are combining simultaneously, the effect is certain to create a wave of turning points and crises. This is the proverbial Double Whammy.

Deals Made and Shunned

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu turned down a golden opportunity to make a deal last week with the Palestinians, in spite of persistent diplomatic pressure from the United States and Great Britain. The celestial climate allowing this window of cooperation was Jupiter alined with two asteroids, Pallas Athene and Juno.

This rare alinement combines strategic vision (Pallas Athene) and opportunity (Jupiter) with partnership (Juno). Elsewhere in the geopolitical arena, the tobacco industry saw the wisdom of an out-of-court settlement and agreed to pay the State of Minnesota $6.5 billion over the next 25 years. Simultaneously, the Chrysler Corporation and Daimler-Benz of Germany agreed to a merger worth $39 billion.

We can expect that the Uranus station on May 16 will bring a radical change in current Israeli politics. Israel was born 50 years ago (on May 14, 1948) and is besieged by extremist elements both internally and in the surrounding region. With its Sun in Taurus and Moon in regal Leo, Israeli politicians can be very stubborn and controlling.

Extreme political factions are ruled by the planet Pluto, and over the next week transiting Uranus will be making its station exactly opposite Israel’s Pluto. Threats from divergent extremist groups are promising to break Netanyahu’s coalition if a deal is brokered, even as more moderate groups are threatening to walk if he doesn’t make a deal.

This coming week transiting Saturn will be opposing Netanyahu’s Sun. He faces challenges on all fronts, and his political survival is at stake. The turning point in Israel is at hand...

Jerry Seinfeld Yada-Yada-Yada

This Thursday Jerry Seinfeld ends his tenure as master of the situation comedy. Watched by 30 million viewers a week, and raking in over $200 million a year for NBC, “Seinfeld” will soon be reduced to endless re-runs and speculation over spin-off series, like “Frasier.”

Jerry Seinfeld was born an easy-going Taurus, with his Moon in dramatic, warm-hearted Leo (b. April 29, 1955). This combination displays passionate stubbornness, and a strong urge to control ideas, relationships, and plans. Seinfeld not only starred in his sitcom, but also wrote, directed, and produced the show. Other noted personalities with this Sun and Moon placement reflect the same tendencies: Barbra Streisand, Evita Peron, and Zubin Mehta, and Israel.

The dysfunctional circle of friends on “Seinfeld” can be seen reflected in Jerry’s horoscope. With his Mars in versatile, witty Gemini, the zany plot-lines scattered in many directions, with clever intersections among the comings-and-goings. Elaine, the only female member of the regular cast, was feisty and independent, just as Seinfeld’s Venus Aries would indicate.

One of the closest planetary aspects in his chart is Mercury opposite Saturn. Mercury-Saturn aspects are sometimes known for their slow, cautious thinking, an attribute amplified by Mercury’s placement in Taurus. This aspect shows the mental discipline and hard work that went into making the hit show. Mercury-Saturn is also very sensitive to criticism, and (wounded by transiting Chiron) unfavorable reviews early in the season undoubtedly factored heavily in his decision.
