Washington Paralyzed by Mars and Saturn
Last Friday Paula Jones lawyers deposited a 700 page
report describing President Clinton’s pattern of sexual
harassment, cover-up, and obstruction of justice. Then, on
the Ides of March (Et tu Brute?) Kathleen Willey, a loyal
Democrat who cannot be said to be part of a right wing
conspiracy, recounted her compelling story on 60 Minutes.
These latest developments took place as Mars entered
Clinton’s seventh house of open enemies. Over the next
two weeks Mars will catch up with slower moving Saturn,
which has been in his seventh house since June 1996. The
combination of Mars and Saturn (exact on April 2)
represents a piling on effect, as Congress and the media are
now transfixed by the latest accusations to the point of
excluding all other business.
Washington is in a state of paralysis, a situation brought
about by the juxtaposition of Mars and Saturn which have
very different styles. The archetypal Mars is like the legal
knight, charging ahead with accusatory blows, and can be
seen as the aggressive attorneys. Saturn, the voice of
authority and power, is cautious and strategic. Republicans,
who collectively are in power, are not yet willing to call for
impeachment since Clinton’s approval rating is higher than
ever at 63 percent.
The ball is in the court of public opinion. As Mars
approaches Saturn we can expect that the business of the
nation will be put on hold. Forget the atrocities in Kosovo;
“Wag the Dog” has already played itself out. This week
watch “Moby Dick” to see what effect an unhealthy
obsession has on the Ship of State.
The Pluto in Leo Generation
The outer planets Uranus and Neptune are now in
Aquarius, awakening the progressive, high-tech, alliance
building nature of that sign. While Uranus and Neptune
might evoke the Age of Aquarius ideals as we collectively
edge toward the Millennium, these two planets will also
present major obstacles to the “me generation” symbolized
by Pluto in Leo.
Pluto was in Leo from the late 1930s through 1958, and
includes most individuals holding elected office. Our
government is basically ruled by the Pluto in Leo
generation, and when Uranus in particular opposes one’s
natal Pluto, the impact is often extremely disruptive and
destructive.
Individually, each member of the Pluto in Leo generation is
striving to be seen, noticed, and remembered. Pluto in Leo
represents the passion, the drive for approval and applause,
even if it means extending in an unnatural direction. As
noted author and speaker Steven Forrest says: “The Shadow
for Pluto in Leo lies in the pitiful, insecure obsession with
the appearance of glory: the eternal disease of kings.”
Transiting Uranus opposes Bill Clinton’s Pluto in Leo in
May, when the Paula Jones case goes to court. This Uranus
transit will be momentous because it makes a retrograde
station exactly as it opposes Clinton’s Pluto. Uranus to
Clinton’s Pluto holds the potential for bringing down the
President.
Buddy
Bill and Hillary were photographed at the Camp David
retreat this past week-end embracing and smiling, and
apparently unperturbed by the allegations of sexual
infidelity. While they were posing for the media, Buddy,
the First Dog, took the opportunity to heed the call of
nature, somewhat spoiling the polished photo-op. Ace
reporter Sam Donaldson called it an “omen.”
In the entire history of American Presidents, only two have
endured impeachment hearings, Andrew Johnson and
Richard Nixon. The common astrological indicator in their
respective horoscopes was a transiting Uranus adversely
aspecting a Capricorn Sun. In 1868 Uranus was nearly
exactly opposite Johnson’s Capricorn Sun when he beat the
impeachment proceedings by only one vote. Nixon
resigned on August 9, 1974 when transiting Uranus was
squaring his Capricorn Sun.
Clinton won’t experience a transit of Uranus to his Sun
until 2001, but a close parallel situation is coming this May
when Uranus makes its station opposite Clinton’s
Mercury-Pluto conjunction. Richard Nixon, like Clinton,
has a Mercury-Pluto aspect in his natal chart, a difficult
combination that often produces an obsessive fear of
enemies. Nixon’s Mercury-Pluto ultimately led to his
downfall when he obstructed justice to conceal his
obsessive need to control his enemies.
Clinton too doesn’t have opponents; he has enemies. And
he too is faced with obstructing justice; the Paula Jones
case will likely fail on its merits. Clinton, like Nixon, may
eventually have to invoke Executive Privilege to get rid of
Ken Starr, and in the process he invokes the image of
Nixon’s collapse.
In the end, when all Nixon’s supporters were either
prosecuted, fired or quit, he still had the loyal support of
his wife Pat, who Nixon gave the pet name “Buddy.”
