Saturn Leads Planetary Confluence

On Tuesday when the Sun enters Aquarius a confluence of major planetary events begins. The list includes a powerful Mars-Jupiter conjunction on the same day right on the U.S. Moon. Then on January 28 during the New Moon, Neptune will enter Aquarius, a pivotal event which some astrologers are hailing as the beginning of the Age of Aquarius.

Reflecting the abundance of activity in the heavens, Americans on a personal and collective plane are likewise going through a significant developmental stage. Transiting Saturn opposing the U.S. Saturn culminates this week, and describes how American institutions are being tested at many levels.

America's Libra Saturn is designed to negotiate. The Middle East situation is currently hopelessly blocked, but Arafat and Netanyahu will make sequential visits to the White House this week to get the peace process back on track. Similarly, American diplomacy skills are being severely tested in Iraq (war?), Iran (reconciliation?), and Cuba (liberation theology?).

In the business world, America's Saturn represents its corporate and financial structure, which for the most part has provided a bulwark against Asian economic woes, and a safe harbor for the liquid global currencies.

The weak link in corporate America is in the tobacco industry. RJR documents were revealed last week showing that corporate strategy has targeted the youth market since 1974, and specifically with Joe Camel since 1984. Transiting Saturn in America's 6th house of health became victorious, and gave rise to observers' comments that this pending settlement is the most historic public health achievement in history.

At the federal level one weak link is about to become a major news story. NTSB Chairman James Duncan tried to close the books on the TWA #800 crash by dismissing it as an internal explosion due to a mechanical flaw. Look for the re-opening of this case with new evidence of an external hit from a missile. The FBI, Navy, and NTSB may be involved in a cover-up.

Clinton Wags the Dog

In a real-life episode of Wag the Dog, President Clinton was photographed dancing with Hillary during their "private" retreat to the ocean. Wag the Dog, a satirical movie starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert DeNiro, portrays how an American President escapes a sex scandal through an outrageous manipulation of the media.

On Saturday President Clinton gave a deposition in the lawsuit pitting him against Paula Jones (with Venus retrograde conjunct the U.S. Pluto). Earlier in the week he lambasted the press for invading his privacy, though he did admit he liked the pictures.

Another prominent national marriage test has been that of Gary and Lorna Wendt. Gary offered $20 million to end this corporate marriage. Claiming to be a full partner in this marriage, Lorna wants half of his net worth, which amounts to $50 million.

How much is a corporate wife worth? As transiting Saturn opposes the U.S. Saturn in Libra, the sign of marriage, Americans (through the vicarious experience of Clinton and Wendt) are rethinking the relationship between sex, marriage, and money.

John Glenn in Space Again

On February 20, 1962 Astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth in a vehicle known as the Mercury capsule. Mars and Jupiter were in Aquarius back then, activating America's fourth house Moon, and generating a corresponding enormous public enthusiasm for the space program.

Last week, with Mars and Jupiter lining up on the U.S. Aquarian Moon for the first time since 1962, NASA announced that Glenn, at the ripe old age of 77 (b. July 18, 1921; Cambridge OH; 3:00 PM), will once again participate in an historic space mission.

That Glenn was riding in the Mercury capsule is no minor detail from an astrological perspective: Glenn's Cancer Sun is precisely lined up with the U.S. Mercury, and the U.S. Sun is lined up with John Glenn's Mercury. This double resonance points out Glenn's role as a travel agent for the rest of the country.

Glenn's strongly traditional Jupiter- Saturn conjunction in his tenth house of career reflects his social role as a prominent legislator and politician. But then, the more unorthodox planet Uranus brings him to the forefront of modern technology and cultural progress. Uranus in the fourth house cannot stay home, but is impelled to seek out new territory and a larger, more inclusive concept of "home."

Transiting Pluto (his chart ruler) was exactly opposing his 4th Uranus on Feb. 20, 1962 from his tenth house of honor and recognition. In 1998 his progressed Venus and Mars are together opposing his Uranus from the identical location. John Glenn shows how Uranus in the fourth, in its healthy expression, is the global citizen.
